Located on the eastern part of India, the State of
Odisha is the 9th largest state by area and the 11th largest by population. Oriya (officially spelled Odia) is the official and most spoken language of the state. The modern state of Odisha is administered on same lines as other states of India. Odisha is headed by a Chief Minister and a council of other ministers responsible to an elected unicameral legislature and by a Governor appointed by the President of India. The Chief Minister is the head of the government and is vested with most of the executive powers.Odisha’s political history dates back to pre-independence era. The
leaders of Odisha had taken active participation in the freedom struggle
of India. The eminent political leaders like Utkal Gourab Madhusudan
Das, Harekrushna Mahtab, Gopabandhu Choudhury, Nabakrushna Choudhury and
others promoted the Congress Movement in Orissa. They demanded for a
separate provincial status to the state. The demand was fulfilled in
1936. Although Odisha province came into existence on 1st April
1936 but it was declared as a separate state of Indian Union only after
India’s independence i.e. in 1949. Congress has ruled the land for a
long time. In the past Odisha has not achieved significant success in
the fields like education, industry, agriculture etc. But in recent time
the development has been praiseworthy. The good governance has led to
an all-round social and economic development of the state.
Governance in Odisha
Presently
Orissa has 3 major political parties – Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress. Naveen Patnaik, the current Cheif Minister of Odisha is founder of Biju Janta Dal. He won second, third and fourth terms as Chief Minister of Odisha in 2004, 2009 and 2014 state elections respectively. Modern Odisha, with its potential economic resources in the form of
abundant minerals, extensive forests, fertile lands, perinial rivers,
and numerous waterways, is marching towards an utmost level of
advancement in varied fields. The government is trying its best to make
Odisha one of the most industrially developed states in the countr.
